Silverfish Identification & Prevention

What are silverfish?

The silverfish is a nuisance pest that often finds its way into homes and other buildings. They have a tear-dropped shaped body and three distinctive bristle-like appendages protruding from their back end. Their antennae are as long as their body. Adult silverfish grow to about 3/4 of an inch in length.

Silverfish received their name because of the fish-like, silvery-metallic scales that cover their brown bodies. The scales give them a shiny, shimmery appearance. Silverfish are wingless, but able to move quickly using a wriggling motion. Young silverfish, or nymphs, look very similar to an adult but are smaller in size.

Why do I have a silverfish problem?

Silverfish live outside in damp, dark, quiet areas. If the weather becomes too hot and dry, they will move inside and take up residence in areas of a home that mimic their outdoor environment. They can also be transported into homes through packages, boxes, potted plants, used furniture, or rugs.

Where will I find silverfish?

Silverfish are nocturnal and remain in their nesting spots during the day, emerging at night to forage for food. Outside, silverfish live underneath mulch, landscaping ties, fallen trees, woodpiles, and rocks. Inside, silverfish can be found in basements, laundry rooms, crawlspaces, and under sinks.

  • Install door sweeps on exterior doors, especially basement doors.
  • Seal any cracks or gaps in your home's foundation.
  • Wipe down sinks and tubs after using them.
  • Caulk gaps found around exterior windows and doors.
  • Make sure that gutters are clear or debris, and can direct water away from the exterior of your home.
  • Reduce moisture levels inside of your home through the use of dehumidifiers, air-conditioners, and ventilated fans.
